# Synthesis Lab > A research workspace that an AI assistant can operate. Manuscripts, cited sources, notes, citation verification, peer review and analysis runs live in one place with full provenance; the researcher's own ChatGPT, Claude, Grok or any MCP client does the reasoning over it. Synthesis Lab is both a web app (https://synth-lab.com) and a remote MCP server (https://synth-lab.com/api/mcp) with OAuth sign-in. Connecting a client opens one browser tab to sign in or create an account and choose which projects the client may reach; the client is then back in the chat. ## What it does - Keeps manuscripts (Markdown, versioned, co-edited in real time) with the papers they cite as sources, with full text where available. - Verifies citations against the cited papers, checks claims in text, measures citation coverage and suggests citations. - Records every AI or app edit in a ledger: who (person and agent), when, which tool, the stated reason, and the exact diff, on a safety checkpoint that can be restored. - Runs peer review with independent reviewer models that read the cited sources, and drafts point-by-point responses. - Runs Python scripts and notebooks in a sandbox and keeps results and plots with the manuscript. - Shares projects with viewer, commenter, editor and admin roles; AI use by editors is billed to the project owner. ## Connect from a client - Claude Code: `claude mcp add --transport http synthesis-lab https://synth-lab.com/api/mcp` - Claude Desktop and claude.ai: Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector → https://synth-lab.com/api/mcp - ChatGPT: Settings → Connectors → Create (developer mode) → MCP server URL https://synth-lab.com/api/mcp, authentication OAuth - Cursor and others: an HTTP (streamable) MCP server at the same URL; clients without OAuth can bridge with mcp-remote ## First steps after connecting - Say "get started with Synthesis Lab", or pick the get-started prompt where the client shows prompts. The getStarted tool reports where the account stands and the next step. - To link Zotero, ORCID, Google Drive or Consensus, the assistant calls connectAccount and gives the researcher a one-time link to open in a browser; listConnections confirms it afterwards. - A draft comes in with requestUpload (a link that takes a Word or PDF file) or importDocumentFromUrl (a Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive share link); importReferences adds the papers its reference list cites. ## Docs - [How to connect, what the client can do, security and revocation](https://synth-lab.com/docs/mcp) - [Pricing](https://synth-lab.com/pricing) - [Privacy policy](https://synth-lab.com/privacy) - [Terms of service](https://synth-lab.com/terms) - Support: support@synth-lab.com
